Built in response to a demand for a dedicated logistic vehicle that could move the heaviest guns in service, the M4 used several components from the then obsolete M2 Light Tank. Nearly 6,000 were produced between 1943 and 1945, with two main variants being produced - one to tow 90mm anti-aircraft guns, and the other to tow heavy howitzers, such as the 155mm M1 ('Long Tom').

The M4 High Speed Tractor saw service in WW2, as well as several other conflicts, such as the Korean War. Many would go on to be adapted for civilian use post-war serving as carriers within the construction and logging industry.
